      That's really misleading. How is it harrasment if there was proper consent? It's easy to baselessly throw around words like this

    • @ellaminnow
      @ellaminnow 2 роки тому

      He asked for her consent, and she gave it (re: the flirting), and she did not consent to sex and he respected that. It was not harassment. I don't understand this current trend to infantilize women; women have autonomy, and to suggest otherwise is dangerously misogynistic. The author of the piece made a decision that she ended up regretting. It is a great lesson to be able to take responsibility for your own actions.

    • @ellaminnow
      @ellaminnow 2 роки тому

      Reading it does not discount his beautiful performance or the quality of his work. I think the author of the piece looks worse than he does, as she at no point told him how she felt about his actions, until the end when she didn't want to have sex and he respected that. She consented to the flirting. People who worked on the show, including other interns, have said that she was not entirely truthful with her accounts: when he talked about what his sister said, they were in a group with others and it was not directed at her specifically. None of the interns who worked on the NYCC show were brought along for the Broadway production, and it is surmised that her father "warned her" that might happen because it is not a done thing for interns on those NYCC shows to follow along if it goes to Broadway. She has the right to her feelings and her own account, but she also has a responsibility to her actions and to honesty. Infantilizing women and attempting to take away their autonomy is dangerously misogynistic.

      @@taka-taktak How is it not about him? So many people reached that same conclusion after reading because of all the hints she offered and the writer herself was literally at the gala of this musical. It seems way too large of a coincidence for it to not be about him. Even the sister she mentioned was clearly Maggie Gyllenhaal.

      @@taka-taktak If you read the piece, she worked with him when the show was not on Broadway yet. Maybe try reading it again. I don’t have anything against the guy; I don’t even know him. It’s not “gossip.” The essay made it incredibly clear it was about him though. Do with that what you will. She also never mentions the movie star himself was a tony winner; simply that her boss had trusted her to work with Tony winners before. There is an insanely small chance it is not about him. Saying that someone’s story is a “fanfic” just because it casts a negative light on your favorite actor seems childish though.

    Sunday in the Park with George will always be one of my favorite musicals. Although I am a scientist, I see bit of myself in George. The obsession with work, compulsion to make things work, the inner turmoil when scrambling to find something novel, all the while not taking care of myself and ignoring the world around me including the people I truly care about. The lack of appreciation in my own work, not wanting to give myself credit for the work whether it is a success or failure, and the constant fear of being judged. These all hit home pretty hard for me and I alway cry at the end, when George once again learns to give himself room to create without being stuck in his own head. The messages are so eloquently communicated through songs and book. I can see why some people will hate it, but I think that if one takes the time for introspection, they will find that the messages are very relatable to almost anyone.

    Musical theatre has never really been a big thing for me, but since Sondheim died and I reheard his Desert Island Discs on BBC radio with Sue Lawley, I am absolutely compelled by his creative process. One of his pieces was the Left Hand Piano Concerto by Ravel and you just know he listened to it a lot while he was composing, he features chord progressions from it in so many of his pieces. I know next to very little about music but it made me really excited to know more about his work and now I can't get enough!!!! Mandy Patinkin is impassioned in this role and has a very full and mature voice. Jake Gyllenhaal is more surprising and surprised by what he is singing, which is very appropriate to this particular song, extremely engaging. I haven't heard or seen his full performance but it certainly makes me want to. Getting to hear all the various interpretations of Sondheim's work has been fascinating and you know there are some more great versions yet to come. They won't have the hand of the maestro on them personally, but there are enough knowledgeable enthusiasts out there to make a great go of it. Here's hoping...

    listening to this for the second time in a row I can really hear how Sondheim was using the repetitive phrasing to show how George was obsessing over being left, and his obsessive nature in general. The brief times when he breaks out of that--noticing the window, are also breaks in the repetitive melody that provide moments of space in his mental state.
